Earlier this month during the new moon phase of the lunar cycle,  PENV personnel completed a survey recording hatchling orientation on more than ten flatback and green turtle nesting beaches.

The team monitored the beaches daily for hatched nests. At each one, they recorded  any signs of predation or predator activity and the direction or angle of hatchling tracks in the sand, as they left the nest to find the ocean.

Adam Mitchell, the Field Team Leader said:

“The most interesting thing about the survey was seeing hatchlings emerge during the day on the amazing and remote west coast beaches.”

A second survey to this location is scheduled for the next new moon.
